About

Why this site exists

Warm neutrals written for British rooms, British light and British budgets.

The Warm Neutral is a small independent site about decorating British homes in warm neutrals — and about the vintage colour that stops them looking flat.

What this site is for

Most neutral interiors content is American, minimalist and cold: greige walls, arch mirrors, nothing older than last season. It also assumes a house with big windows and a lot of light.

British houses are not like that. Rooms are smaller, light is greyer for eight months of the year, and a colour that looks calm in a Californian sitting room looks like a dentist's waiting area in a north-facing terrace in November.

So everything here is written for the rooms people actually live in. Oatmeal and linen as the base layer. Ochre, rust and olive doing the talking, arriving through charity shop glass and old ceramics rather than a matching cushion set bought in one go.

How the guides are written

Paint shades are named specifically, and checked. Products are named where naming them helps. Nothing is recommended on the basis that it photographs well.

Where advice depends on your room — and with neutrals it almost always does — the guides say which way your windows need to face for it to hold.

How this site makes money

Through affiliate links. When a guide links to a product and you buy it, this site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Those links are labelled clearly, on the page, before they appear — not in a footer disclaimer you would have to go looking for. There is more detail on the disclosure page.
